Marine Welder Training Program

Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, along with several local Virginia community colleges in Hampton Roads have partnered together to offer a three-week Marine Welder Trainee Program.
No experience is necessary! The program is designed to prepare candidates to enter the welding school program at Newport News Shipbuilding. The three-week course will cover safety, an introduction to welding and welding skills, a validation of basic welder competencies, and an evaluation of employability skills. This program is designed to be 90% hands-on, focusing on a candidate's ability to follow verbal and written instruction, display manual dexterity consistent with the welding craft, accomplish specific tasks in a reasonable time, and perform all duties in a safe manner.
Basic Qualifications
·         Must be at least 18 years old
·         U.S. Citizen
·         Must complete job application
·         Must complete interview
·         Successfully complete Work Keys Testing
·         $250 tuition fee (paid to community college where training will take place)
How to Participate
1.     Apply for the program - Note: Applications are now being accepted! Apply to Req ID #5536
2.     Those selected must complete an interview, then pass work keys testing, then pass a drug screen, physical and background check to be accepted into the program.
3.     Once accepted to participate, complete the community college's enrollment process and pay the $250 tuition fee
4.     Attend the three-week program, Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
5.      After completion of the program, start work with Newport News Shipbuilding as a full-time Structural Welder. The $250 tuition fee will then be reimbursed by NNS under the shipyard's tuition reimbursement program.
