Operator Maintenance (Franklin) Position #07179 Company Description: The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state's road, bridges, tunnels and ferries. Through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, it also provides funding for airports, rail, and public transportation. Virginia has the third largest state-maintained highway system in the country covering 58,321 miles of interstate, primary, secondary and frontage roads. VDOT has about 7,500 employees making it one of the largest state agencies in Virginia. Salary Range: $27,145 to $42,000 Job Description: This recruitment will fill multiple positions within the Franklin Residency. Current vacancies are at Smithfield and Stony Creek. Additional vacancies may be filled with this recruitment. The Hampton Roads District is seeking to fill multiple Operator Maintenance positions to perform a combination of skilled equipment operation, preventive maintenance and manual labor. Equipment operation includes but is not limited to backhoes, dump trucks, tractors and similar equipment. Perform emergency roadway operations as an essential employee; must be willing to work outside of normal work hours during emergency conditions. This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. This position is essential for emergencies and requires work outside normal hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures. Demonstrated experience in equipment operation and performing preventive maintenance. Knowledge of Safety policies, procedures, and programs. Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand-held and power tools and light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair. Perform heavy manual labor. Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions. Must have a valid Commercial Driver's License Learner's Permit at time of application or currently hold a CDL. Applicants with a CDL Learners Permit must obtain the CDL within 60 days of employment. Must have a valid Commercial Driver's License at the time of application (minimum Class B with Air Brake endorsement). Preferred Qualifications: High school graduate or equivalent. Experience in maintenance and/or construction of roadways. Commercial Driver's License. Special Requirements: DMV records check by the Department is required. Criminal history records check and fingerprint check are required. A driver's license valid in Virginia. Must have a valid CDL Learner's Permit. Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. Ability to obtain Flagger and Work Zone Certifications. Applicants selected for interview will be required to perform a skills demonstration as part of the interview process. Pre-employment physical with drug screening is required. Random drug testing will occur throughout employment. Safety shoes required.
