Norfolk, VA ZOOLOGICAL

The Accounting Assistant assists the Accounting Manager by performing clerical and accounting functions, as well as providing financial support to all Virginia Zoological Society departments. POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the following functions: •Process Accounts Receivable: receive, record, post & deposit all revenue for all departments within the Virginia Zoological Society. •Prepare all VZS deposits for pick-up by courier service each Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Sort and file all A/R deposit and correspondence. •Consult with Accounting Manager to implement, monitor and adjust all receivables, cash handling procedures and controls as needed for all departments within the Virginia Zoological Society. •Support A/R & A/P by keying daily deposits to the general ledger, and preparing and validating paid vouchers and mailing A/P payments. •Assist with maintaining audit items throughout the fiscal year, and assist during the audit as directed by the Accounting Manager. •Manage merchant zccounts from daily usage and supplies through monthly reconciliations. •Prepare and forward monthly sales tax report to Accounting Manager. •Maintain: postage meter usage log and provide monthly report; VZS Annual Contract Binder; and general office supply and equipment orders for VZS,and evaluate on an ongoing basis. EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience: •Associate degree in accounting or finance and two years of A/R experience. •At least 2 years of experience in Financial Edge or equivalent accounting software, and POS (counterpoint preferred) and merchant equipment and reconciliation. •Thorough knowledge of accounting and A/R functions, including budgeting, internal controls and report preparation. •Working knowledge of mathematical principles to make calculations, balance and reconcile figures, and make changes accurately. •Detailed knowledge of accounting practices in order to assist in directing all VZS department finances. •Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, the board, vendors, auditors and the public. •Ability to make independent decisions and think logically in order to troubleshoot, analyze situations and make sound business decisions. •Willingness to serve in every respect and at all times as a goodwill ambassador for the Virginia Zoological Society and the Virginia Zoo in contacts with Zoo visitors, partners and the general public. •Ability to arrive to work on time and maintain a positive attendance record. •Effective time-management skills. •Ability to prioritize and delegate responsibilities when necessary. •Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously. •Willingness to work a flexible schedule when needed. •Ability to work in a professional manner with Zoo visitors, clients, volunteers and staff. SALARY & BENEFITS: Annual salary range $28,000 to $32,000 based on qualifications. Qualify for paid holidays, and health, dental and life insurance following 90-day probation.
