Child Development Specialist I and II TCC Child Development Center Portsmouth Campus Youth Services The YWCA is the oldest and largest women’s organization in the world and is the preeminent provider of services for victims of domestic violence in this country. As an affiliate of the YWCA U.S.A., the YWCA South Hampton Roads works locally to implement the mission of the YWCA: Eliminating Racism and Empowering Women. Since 1911, the YWCA South Hampton Roads has served as a source of strength for over a quarter million women and children in the Hampton Roads community. Recently, the organization celebrated its Centennial Anniversary which marked a major milestone in the organization’s history of promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. The YWCA South Hampton Roads is seeking team members to serve as a Child Development Specialist I and II. Both positions are responsible for the daily, classroom implementation of an early child education program for 2 ½ -5 years old. They are also responsible for the safety and well-being of 6-8 children at once or up to 14 children with the assistance of another staff member, at any given time. Program components include a comprehensive, well-planned curriculum with high-quality instruction for preschool aged children. The Child Development Centers are located on all four Tidewater Community College Campuses, and this specific location is the Portsmouth campus. The program does not serve children at the Administrative building on Colley Avenue. Hours of operation are 7am-7pm Monday through Friday. Applicants must be available to work the entirety of a 4 to 6 hour shift, EVERY DAY. Both positions are part-time of 20 – 30 hours per week. The hourly pay for the Child Development Specialist I begins at $8.50 per hour. The hourly pay for the Child Development Specialist II begins at $10.50. Essential Responsibilities: • Assures for the health, welfare, and safety of the children. • Interacts with the children and encourages their involvement in activities. • Provides a warm, safe, and caring environment that is kept orderly, clean, and appealing. The environment should reflect the school’s philosophy and allow each child to grow and to explore. • Assists Child Development Specialist II in planning, preparing, and implementing daily activities (indoor/outdoor) as they relate to the curriculum. • Maintains proper discipline and assists students in developing self-discipline and a sense of responsibility. • Assists Child Development Specialist II in recording and maintaining school, classroom, and students' information, such as attendance, student files, progress reports, lesson plans, curriculum development, collection of data, etc., including keeping records of all developing skills (physical, social, emotional, and cognitive). • Works with other staff members to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere. • Ensures confidentiality of privileged information. • Maintains adherence to all school and YWCA policies and procedures, including any outside agency requirements (e.g. Virginia Department of Social Services). • Attends all faculty and team meetings (exact meeting dates and times TBD). • Performs additional program duties as assigned by the Site Coordinator. Requirements Required Qualifications Child Development Specialist I: Education/Certification Child Development Specialist I: • Associate’s Degree in a child related field is preferred. Must be actively working towards an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in child related field. • Acceptable Criminal History and Central Registry Sex Offender Record Check Reports Special Knowledge/Skills Child Development Specialist I: • Minimum of 1 year programmatic experience with Preschool age children. • Experience working with persons from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds • Must be flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of the children and program • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age Required Qualifications Child Development Specialist II: Education/Certification Child Development Specialist II: • B.A. or B.S. in child related field is preferred. Associate’s Degree in a child related field is REQUIRED. • Acceptable Criminal History and Central Registry Sex Offender Record Check Reports Special Knowledge/Skills Child Development Specialist II: • Two years experience working with preschool age children • Experience working with persons from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds • Must be flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of the children and program • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age • Successfully achieve CPR, First Aid, and MAT certification Qualified candidates should submit a cover letter and resume by January 10, 2014 to Leah Williams at hr@ywca-shr.org.
