Marine Electrician Training Program

Newport News Shipbuilding
Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, along with Thomas Nelson Community College Workforce Development, and several local Virginia community colleges in Hampton Roads have partnered together to offer a three-week Marine Electrician Trainee Program.
No experience is necessary! The program is designed to prepare trainees to perform the basic marine electrician skills necessary to work safely in a shipyard industrial environment. Trainees will learn and practice basic electrical skills including: understanding electrical terminology/principles, workplace safety, electrical safety, hand and power tools, wire ways, cable preparation, and electrical and equipment hook-ups.
Basic Qualifications
·         Must be at least 18 years old
·         U.S. Citizen
·         Must complete job application
·         Work Keys Testing in Locating Information and Reading Tests
·         $250 tuition fee (paid to community college where training will take place)
How to Participate
1.     Apply for the program Note: Now Accepting Applications! Apply to Req ID #5522
2.     Selected candidates will then be scheduled to complete WorkKeys testing and an interview with Newport News Shipbuilding
3.     Those selected to participate must then pass Work Keys testing, a drug screen, physical and background check to be accepted into the program.
4.     Once accepted, complete the community college's enrollment process and pay the $250 tuition fee
5.     Attend the three-week program, Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
6.     After completion of the program, start work with Newport News Shipbuilding as a full-time marine electrician. The $250 tuition fee will then be reimbursed by NNS under the shipyard's tuition reimbursement program.
