Estimator Trainee-shipyard work (Norfolk) BAE SYSTEMS

The Estimator 1 Trainee (ET) learns to be a member of Contracts and is assigned tasks to learn the elements of responsibility of Estimating and/or Contract Administration during a 12 - 18 month period. • In the first 6 months, The (ET) will be in a trial period to learn about the different processes relative to Estimating and Contract Administration responsibilities. • Upon satisfactorily completing this trial period, the (ET) will be assigned to projects for an additional 6-12 months to continue the learning process
I. BASIC FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
To support Estimating Department with consistent and formalized labor, material cost estimates, and subcontractor cost estimates for proposed ship repair and conversion projects.
II. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Learn to develop man-hour, material, and subcontractor cost estimates as directed that most accurately reflect anticipated production performance by work item or work package, for the repair, renewal, or modification of all elements of ship components for government and commercial projects. 2. In the development of estimates, review the assigned customer furnished information for a thorough understanding of the workscope requirements, augmenting this information as required with onboard inspections, where practical, and bidders questions to clarify work scope requirements. Investigate past performance as directed for related work and interface with Senior Estimating Staff to verify estimate and to support development of most reasonable values for performance of the work. 3. Learn to review work specifications and other information as directed for potential outsourcing candidates. Solicit quotations through purchasing from qualified companies for this work, and upon their receipt, work with purchasing to prepare comparison sheets for analysis and selection. 4. Learn to review and validate coverage of material requirement lists provided by purchasing. 5. Working with purchasing, identify and list all long time material and equipment requiring a procurement period that may impact contract performance or a lead time which may jeopardize the proposed contract completion date. 6. Maintain estimate, material and subcontracting pricing files from previous purchase orders and vendor quotes. 7. Perform similar, incidental and other duties as assigned. Required Skills and Education
Required Education: Maritime Apprentice School 2-4 year program graduate. Required Skills: Must have 4+ years Shipboard Ship Repair / New Construction experience. - COMMUNICATION - LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Must have the ability to learn to read and specifications, drawings, budgets, manning requirements, government regulations, common manuals and journals. Good communication skills among peers and other departments.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: A. Physical Tasks 80% Office Setting, including sitting, some bending, walking and viewing; 20% outdoors in changeable climate and temperature. Includes walking, standing, climbing. B. Working Conditions 80% Office Setting, including controlled environment and temperature; 20% outdoors in changeable temperature and moderate noise. Includes 15% domestic and occasional international travel. C.
Must be able to climb up and down shipboard ladders and stairwells, capable of maneuvering through tight voids and spaces without hindrance. D.
Must be able to effectively wear and operate required safety equipment to include respirators, safety harnesses and other safety orientated gear.
