Description POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Child Care Director and in harmony with the Christian nature and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA, the Bus Driver is responsible for driving a YMCA bus to transport members and/or program participants. The Bus Drivers primary responsibility is for the safety of the children on the bus.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Fill out all log sheets, i.e. Penske pre-trip inspections, mileage logs for each transport.
2. Clean vehicle after each use – pick up trash, papers, sweep, etc.
3. Lock all doors and windows after each use.
4. Return all gas receipts and gas card after use.
5. Report all repairs and/or needed maintenance to your supervisor.
6. Drive safely and observe all traffic rules, signs and courtesies.
7. Insure the safety of all passengers while entering and exiting the bus and while crossing driveways or parking lots.
8. No smoking in the YMCA bus or in the presence of passengers.
9. No cell phone usage while operating a YMCA bus. Knows where the “trax” phone is for the bus in case of an emergency.
10. No listening to the radio or other electronic devices while operating the bus. (The radio can only be used during inclement weather conditions to monitor road conditions.)
11. Must do a visual sweep of the bus before and after each transport. Walk to the end of the bus and check that all passengers have exited the bus.
12. Disengage the bus alarm at the end of the transport, which will sound when the bus engine is turned off.
13. Passenger attendance must be taken during the loading and unloading process. (face count)
14. It is the driver’s responsibility to maintain a current driver’s license and commercial license physical.
15. Report any moving violations you receive to your supervisor. This includes violations received while operating a YMCA bus and/or violations you may receive on your personal time.
16. In the event of an accident notify your supervisor immediately and contact local authorities to obtain an accident report. Do not leave the scene without an exchange of information.
17. Upholds the association’s child protection policies, child abuse and neglect guidelines, and proper reporting procedures at all times.
18. Uses positive guidance techniques on the bus. Understands that if behavior becomes negative the best way to handle it is by pulling the bus over to the side of the road and then taking care of the behavior.
19. Maintains ongoing communication with supervisor.
20. Demonstrates appropriate decision-making abilities.
21. Demonstrates a working knowledge of YMCA mission, values, purpose, and goals. Performs all other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
22. Communicate to the Child Care Director on all program related issues.
23. Report any occurrence to Child Care Director immediately and fills out appropriate paperwork needed before the end of the work day that the occurrence happened.
24. Adheres to all licensing standards.
25. Familiarizes self with all evacuation and emergency procedures for the bus.
26. Remember that at all times you represent the YMCA

QUALIFICATIONS: The Bus Driver must understand and be capable of the necessary skills required for the successful completion of duties including:
1. Minimum 21 years or older

2. Six or more months working with children- ages 5 weeks to 12 years old-in a licensed, child care setting.
3. CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to certify within 60 days of employment)
4. Clear Lexis-Nexis, CRC, and C.P.S. check. Negative TB test.
5. Complete all pre-employment trainings before first day on floor. These include: New Staff Orientation, Child Abuse Prevention training, Child Development training, licensing training, discipline training and Afterschool Basics.
6. Follow the Code of Conduct established by the YMCA of South Hampton Roads
7. Must possess a current Virginia Commercial Driver’s license. A North Carolina license is acceptable if the employee is a resident of North Carolina and commutes on a daily basis between the two states.
8. Must meet the YMCAs insurance carrier’s eligibility requirements.

9. Must have a driving record transcript on file at the Corporate Office and approved by the YMCAs Corporate Office Risk Manager.

10. Must have a current medical examiner’s certificate.

11. Able to communicate and work effectively with groups of children.
12. Attend mandatory staff meetings and training’s to meet Social Service requirement of 16 hours per year.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to:
1. May be required to walk, stand, run, kneel, climb and stoop.
2. Must be able to sit on the floor and get back up
3. Continuous operations requiring attention to detail and multi-tasking.
4. Must be able to lift, pull and pull up to 50 pounds
5. Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time
6. Must be physically able to successfully complete required certifications

The employee is required to talk, hear and see clearly. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally work in outside weather conditions, and is occasionally exposed to wet, cold and/or humid conditions. May occasionally be exposed to cleaning supplies and the noise level in the center is usually loud.
